Are Coda Bodies Deaf Bodies?
One:
Forgotten is the physicality of my brain structure. It’s not just that the software of Coda brains that is different from the ‘Hearing’ majority culture, it’s also the hardwiring.
The emotional-reflexes, the instinct, the behavioral cues are ingrained components of Deaf/Coda bodies. Something I’ve yet seen to be discussed is the default programming of my brain seems to be in sign language. Why when put under anesthetics, and later coming to groggy and confused I can’t seem to respond to spoken language, I don’t even register it. My default, the reboot of my brain, automatically, viscerally chooses American Sign Language. My hardware is programmed in this way. My ability to be successful in a Hearing world is software-code I’ve written, and continue to tinker with over the years. Software I sometimes have to layover my hardware language in order to keep my system running smoothly and in a compatible mode with people I interface with.
